Louis J.Freeh, Former Director, United States Federal Bureau of Investigation

The Author
Wendy Davies, MA Hons, Psychology
Dear Fellow Parent,
As I’m sure you will agree, it seems that almost everything these days is hijacked by unscrupulous, malicious and downright dangerous criminals and organised gangs, exploiting things for their own ends.
Sadly, and very worryingly, cyber-space and the Internet has opened up for these criminals a whole new world of opportunity, and made it relatively easy for them to operate in total secrecy.
The most worrying aspect for parents is the ever-increasing and specific targeting of children and young people, which the existence of the Internet has made all too easy.
So What Makes Our Children So Vulnerable?
Well, there are three main reasons . . .
- The attraction of computers and the Internet to today’s kids, and particularly the massive popularity of blogs and social networking sites.
- The possibility – through email, instant messaging, chatrooms and forums – of instant communication with almost anyone else – including complete strangers.
- Access to information on any subject you can think of – with all the potential dangers that can bring.
Of course all these things can be fantastic, beneficial and educational, and they are definitely here to stay. In fact it would be difficult to imagine our world without all the wonderful benefits that the Internet has given us. But, unfortunately, it has brought with it new risks and dangers that can be sophisticated and often very, very subtle.
Some of these dangers you are probably well aware of, but there are other, less obvious ones, that you may not even have considered – and all posing a very real threat to our children and young people.
Anyone who goes online – for whatever reason – needs to know what to do to protect themselves from these unseen dangers. Do your children know how to keep themselves safe? How to make sure they don’t become victims?
As a parent, you will want to know about these dangers right now, today, because as the Internet grows in size, so do the dangers presented to the children and young people in your family who, without your guidance and supervision, could be open to exploitation.
Don’t Think It Could Happen To You
And Your Kids?
Sorry, but statistics and official reports from many leading sources, including government and law enforcement agencies around the world, show a different picture, of a frightening and rapidly-increasing, upward trend.
Recent surveys have revealed frightening statistics such as these:
- 46% of children had given out personal details about themselves (such as photographs and phone numbers) to people they had met online
- 71% had received messages online from someone they didn’t know
- on 25% of social networking sites people revealed enough information for criminals to commit identity fraud
- 19% of children had experienced cyber-bullying
- 1 in 7 children in the United States from 10 to 17 years old is sexually solicited online
- between 14% and 25% of young people had met someone face-to-face that they had initially met online
These are truly shocking statistics and the implications of them for our children's safety are frightening.
As parents we surely all want to do everything we can to make sure that our own children are not putting themselves at risk in any way when they go online.
Shocking News Reports Day After Day!
I’m sure, like me, you will have seen the almost daily news articles, reporting on criminals using the Internet for immoral purposes . . . of sexual predators grooming children online . . . and of young people arranging to meet someone they had met and chatted to on the Internet . . . and their parents “had no idea they were even using chatrooms . . .”
Here are just a few shocking headlines gathered from newspapers all over the United States . . .
. . . and these are taken from newspapers in the United Kingdom
The Internet is constantly evolving and changing with new technologies, equipment and software making it ever more difficult to keep some sort of control over criminals and sexual predators who are determined to exploit the cyber-world for their own ends.
So serious are the risks posed, that special national and international task forces have been set up world-wide especially to tackle online crime and to try and protect the vulnerable.
Recently the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) televised a program entitled “Crimewatch On The Streets”. Millions of viewers will have watched this special edition in which cameras were given access to police investigations, raids and arrests over a six month period. The program featured the work of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, a special unit set up to combat the growing online sexual exploitation of children both in the U.K. and elsewhere.
It was truly appalling to see the size of the Internet paedophilia problem and the unspeakable depths of depravity involved; so terrible was this depravity involving young children that the police officers were unable to speak about it to the television cameras.
We should all be proud of the dedication of police and law enforcement officers everywhere who are dedicated to tracking down and bringing to justice these evil people who prey on children and young people through the medium of computers. This must be one of the most personally challenging areas of police work that any officer could undertake.
Perhaps the greatest lesson we can learn from this program is that every parent with children who access the Internet should arm themselves with the right knowledge to be able to protect their children and young people – and do so urgently.
It is easier than ever these days for the unscrupulous to gain access to our children and young people, and to find out the details of their private lives. Can you be sure that your kids are not revealing personal information about themselves that would put them in danger, without even realising they are doing it? You may even have unwittingly done this yourself – it can be easy if you are not on your guard and don’t know the potential dangers.
Forgive me if what you have been reading so far is downbeat and worrying, but I’m sure you will agree that it is vital that parents everywhere are aware of the dangers, so that they can take the very simple but all-important steps necessary to keep their children safe.

“How To Keep Your Child Safe On The Internet” covers just about everything you need to know to protect your children. It’s probably the most comprehensive book on this subject available today and without a doubt every home where children and young people access the Internet, should have one - after all, criminals are reaching right into your home these days.
“The internet is a shopping mall for criminals, and for many of us it’s in the home that cyber-crime strikes”
David Davis, Member of Parliament & Shadow Home Secretary
When you have taken the simple steps laid out for you in this book, you will know that you have done everything you can to help keep your kids safe in a dangerous world.
Your children may well be cyber-wise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are worldly-wise. They may be computer-literate, but not necessarily life-literate.
And that is where you come in. Often children do not see the dangers around them. So, when they were small, you taught them to cross the road safely, to ride their bikes safely, to be careful with hot water and sharp objects, and so on. Well it’s just the same with the Internet. You are there to point out the dangers to your children and show them how to avoid them. But you can only do that if you are aware of the dangers yourself, and know how to safeguard against them.
This new publication will show you exactly what you need to know, and its information will be invaluable to you and your family, no matter what age your kids are or how much they think they know about the Internet.
Let me ask you a question here - Would you send your young child out into the centre of your city on their own late at night? Or have them cross a busy road on their own?
And yet, in effect, this is what is happening when your kids go out into the world of cyber-space unsupervised, without any guidance about the dangers lurking there. Our children are vulnerable and it is up to us, as parents, to look out for them.
Computers are great; the Internet is a wonderful and magical place to be. But sadly it can be a dangerous place, and your involvement in your kids’ computer life – whether you are computer-savvy or have little or no knowledge at all – is very very important. It is vital to their development and their personal safety. They’ll thank you one day for what you teach them now.
